| JANUARY 22, 2025 | 70 Questions & Answers from Rabbi Avigdor Miller zt”l’s Thursday Night Lecture L’Fum Tzarah Agra Q. We know that l’fum tzarah agra, according to the distress, so is the reward. Does anyone know why Hashem chose to make us suffer in order to appreciate all the good? A. You know, there are a lot of people that are very unhappy, although there is nothing wrong with them, and they lack nothing. Here is a case of a woman who has a big roomy house, a spacious house, and she’s complaining there’s no room for anything, and she’s pressuring her husband to buy a bigger house. What does her husband do? He brings his mother down to stay for four months. After the mother moves out, it’s a beautiful house, wide open spaces. It’s only because something happens that you appreciate what you have. Good health is real wealth; there is nothing like good health. And still all people who have it don’t appreciate it. But suppose they were in danger of losing it, they suspected something terrible chalilah, and then they went to the specialist who gave them a thorough checkup and his verdict was: nothing is wrong! They walked out of the doctor’s office not on the street, they’re walking on the clouds! They’re very happy; at least for one block… they’re happy. If they have sense they will be happy the rest of their lives. The fact that there are interruptions in the courses of our lives, that’s for the purpose of making us appreciate the well-being of living a peaceful and normal existence. Therefore, all these things that happen in life are in order to give us more reward if we’ll appreciate what we had before and what we hope to have later. Suppose somebody has such troubles, chalilah, that he dies in the midst of his illness. He should realize that it’s the greatest possible gift. There’s no bigger gift than yissurim before dying. Now don’t think you have to look for it, everyone is justified in seeking a remission of his pain, to alleviate his suffering, but all suffering before death is the greatest possible gift, because it’s an exchange for Gehinnom. We don’t realize what suffering does to the personality. It takes the arrogance of the individual, his grandeur, his self- interest, and smashes it to smithereens. Pain is a great leveler: A suffering man in illness is called a dal, “Ashrei maskil el dal” (Tehillim 41:2), he’s a low man. Why? Because he’s not proud anymore. It’s the pride of man, “Gaavah rosh kol chatos — pride is the source of all sin.” His love of himself, his ego, “Ani v’afsi od — I, there’s nobody but myself in the universe.” If he could, he’d shove Hashem Himself out of the universe, he needs more room. Therefore, a man who is suffering in this world is beaten down, and he learns to accommodate himself to that attitude that he is not the top of the world. | JANUARY 22, 2025 | 72 Peanut Butter Hot Cocoa INGREDIENTS: • 2 Tbsp. sugar • 1 Tbsp. coca • 1 Tbsp. water • 1 Cup milk • 1 Heaping tbsp. peanut butter PEANUT BUTTER SAUCE: • 2 Tbsp. corn syrup • 1 Tbsp. peanut butter • Whipped cream DIRECTIONS: 1. In a small pan, combine sugar, cocoa, and water. Heat over medium heat. Stir until the sugar and cocoa are dissolved. 2. Add in the milk and peanut butter and stir. Heat, stir occasionally, until the milk begins to steam, and peanut butter is completely dissolved. 3. In the meantime, combine the corn syrup and peanut and microwave for 10-20 seconds. 4. Pour the drink into a mug, top with whipped cream and peanut butter sauce. This recipe makes a delicious winter classic even better! Deep and comforting chocolate and peanut butter flavors.
