Due to the eggs skyrocketed price the Community Connections brings you some tips and substitutes. There’s no need to panic! We’ve got some of egg substitutes that might come in handy, and plenty of them can be found right in your pantry. Here, you’ll find swaps that work for breads, cookies, meatballs, and so much more. For recipes that use eggs as a binder or for moisture, substitutes like applesauce or oil can do the trick. If the eggs act as a leavening agent, try a combination of vinegar and baking powder. It’s worth noting that the finished product won’t be exactly the same as when you use real eggs. The texture may be a bit different, but overall, you should expect the flavor to remain intact. These egg substitutes will do the trick. Because nothing should come between you and your next baking project—not even a few missing eggs! Aquafaba The magical ingredient known as aquafaba is simply the liquid from canned chickpeas. It makes a great binder on its own, but you can also whip the liquid to create an egg-free meringue. 3 tablespoons aquafaba = 1 egg Vinegar + Baking Soda Eggs are often used as leaveners to make your baked goods rise so you’ll need a replacement that won’t leave your final product flat. This old-school science project will work. The vinegar and baking soda bubble up to create a leavening agent in your baked goods. 1 tablespoon distilled white vinegar or apple cider vinegar + 1 teaspoon baking soda = 1 egg Mashed Banana A mashed banana will impart its own flavor and sweetness to any baking recipe. This egg sub won’t help your baked goods rise, but it will provide lots of moisture. 1/4 cup mashed banana = 1 egg + Ha “ se No s t w th 1 fl w Applesauce Ideal for baked goods where there’s another leavening agent at work, this substitute is used for binding and moisture. Unsweetened plain applesauce works best for the swap, but if sweetened or flavored, just cut back on other sweeteners in the recipe. 1/4 cup unsweetened plain applesauce = 1 egg Yogurt If dairy is not an issue, then using yogurt in place of eggs is ideal for baked goods where there’s another leavening agent at work. It’ll help with binding and moisture. Make sure to clearly show that the finished product is “dairy”. 1/4 cup yogurt = 1 egg Chia See Similar to the “fle brownies. How can one maintain a cheerfulness of mind, when his business is doing badly and things are going wrong? A. When a person sees that his business is not going the way he wants, he must understand that Hashem is preparing for him some very important benefit. There is no question about it. Now, it doesn’t pay right now for him to try to ascertain what the benefit is, because it could be that the benefit is in such a thing that he is not supposed to think about now. There are people whose businesses deteriorated until they went out of business, and that is what Hashem planned for them. And it turned out to be the biggest benefit for them, it saved them. It saved their lives, it saved their souls. But we are not supposed to think. All we have to know is that it is good for us. Sometimes when business is slow, it’s merely because Hashem wants us to take an inventory, and maybe we should change our stock. It could be you are not selling the right merchandise. You are selling what people are not looking for. Here is somebody who is capable of advising you. You may be asleep on the job, and he can wake up your whole business with some advice. There are other ways that people can understand it. But it doesn’t mean that I am capable of interpreting it. However, a man should never allow himself to be dejected because of a business reverse. Never should a man lose sight of the great principle that everything Hashem is doing is tov me’od, and some day he will discover it. Now, I don’t want to bring in one more element; I will just say it, but you shouldn’t necessarily think about it right now. Many times, a person is disappointed in his desires in order to teach him a lesson: he is not in charge, there is a Boss Who is managing things. He thought he would carry out his wishes by doing this and this. He was sure he would succeed in this manner, and it turns out that his plans were all wrong. And one of the purposes is to teach him there are higher plans than his. However, it doesn’t pay to bother with that right now. All that is necessary is to think, “Hashem is doing what is the very best.” Afterward when things have been settled or unsettled, he will be able to make an account and maybe understand what Hashem meant; which form of benefit was intended. JANUARY 29, ‘25 // Pulled Shawarma & Hummus Plate INGREDIENTS: • 2-3 tablespoons oil, for frying • ½ white onion, chopped • 2 cups pulled beef or chicken (leftovers!) • 1 teaspoon brown sugar • 2 cloves garlic crushed • 1 tablespoon shawarma spice • 1 teaspoon salt • ¼ teaspoon black pepper and white pepper • about ¼ cup chicken soup DIRECTIONS: 1. In a medium pan, heat the oil. Add the onion and fry on medium-high heat for 5-7 minutes until golden brown. 2. Lower the heat and add the rest of the ingredients. Cook for an additional 3-4 minutes until the liquid has reduced and absorbed into the meat (this revives the pulled meat and makes it more tender). 3. Remove from heat and serve over chummus with pita chips on the side. EASY HOMEMADE PITA CHIPS: • 2 pita breads • oil, for spraying • ¼ teaspoon salt (or to taste) • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder • sprinkle of smoked paprika • sprinkle of black pepper DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat your oven to 375° and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 2. Using kitchen scissors or a knife, cut each pita into 8 triangles or strips. If the pita is thick, separate each piece into two thinner pieces. 3. Place in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet and spray with oil. Sprinkle with the seasonings and toss to coat. 4. Bake for 8–12 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and crispy. Watch closely to avoid burning. With tender pulled meat, creamy chummus, and crunchy pita chips, this restaurant-worthy dish will make you glad you had leftovers!
