JANUARY 29, ‘25 // This insightful quote speaks to a core principle of life: while we cannot control many of the circumstances we face, we possess the power to control our response to them. It is in how we choose to react that true growth and strength are forged. There is the well-known story of זושא ר’ רבי . One day, a חסיד approached him with a question that has troubled many: “Rebbe, how can we understand the כשם הרעה על לברך אדם חייב :משנה הטובה על שמברך”” “A person is obligated to thank Hashem for the bad just as they thank for the good.” How can a person sincerely bless Hashem for the bad, in the same way they bless for the good? It’s so hard to feel grateful when we are suffering.” Rabbi Zusha responded in a way that left a lasting impression. He said, “To understand this, you must ask someone who has suffered deeply how they see goodness in it.” The surprised חסיד , replied, “But Rebbe, you yourself have experienced so much suffering—poverty, illness, and hardship. Surely, you can teach us from your own experience.” Rabbi Zusha calmly responded, “I have never suffered. Everything that Hashem has sent my way has been for my good, and I have only ever viewed it in that light.” The הרי”ם חידושי writes that while Hashem determines the circumstances we face, it is our בחירה—our free will—that shapes how we perceive and respond to them. By trusting in Hashem’s plan and seeking meaning in difficult times, we can grow stronger and draw closer to Him. We can use this idea in our own lives every day, even in the smallest moments. When we face challenges—whether it’s a minor inconvenience or something more serious—it’s important to remember that how we react is what truly matters. Life is 10% about what happens to us and 90% about how we react to it QUOTE OF THE WEEK Rabbi Yehuda Sputz בס"ד Do you have a favorite quote, a comment, or anything else you would like to share?
