We tried everything we could. At first, we managed to get by—with the door barely holding on, the shelves completely broken, and the vegetables either rotting or freezing solid. But then, in the middle of the day, the fridge just stopped working. As they say, it went up in smoke… The technician came, took a nice fee, and told me what I already knew: “This fridge belongs in the trash.” But where do you find money for a new fridge in the middle of the day? From the money tree that doesn’t grow in my backyard? Someone told me I could find a free fridge online. I had no experience with that, but I let myself be convinced and headed to a kiosk to search for a good fridge. I searched—and found one! Transporting it wasn’t cheap, but hey, a free fridge is worth it… right? I stood in front of the fridge, unsure whether to laugh or cry. What was I supposed to do with a fridge that had no shelves?! With a heavy heart, we hauled it out of the house and went back to the kiosk to find another one. It didn’t take too long before we found another fridge—far from home but completely free. For a fridge like that, the transport cost was practically a joke. Finally, the fridge arrived. We placed it in its spot with great honor and plugged it in— Tzzzt! A short circuit. “Maybe it won’t be too hard to fix?” my wife hoped. But when the technician came, he asked for over six hundred dollars to repair this old, worn-out machine. And just like that, we were back where we started. Frustrated, we wondered—why was this happening to us again? What was Hashem trying to tell us? “Maybe we should check the newspapers instead of the internet?” I suggested. My family shook their heads, but from that moment on, no newspaper went unread. Still, we found nothing. Then, I got a call from my brother. “Hey, do you have any use for an old but good fridge?” he asked. My eyes widened. “Yes! Absolutely!” Before long, the fridge was in our home—a nice, solid fridge, just right for our needs. Completely free. Completely kosher. 291
