At night, right before we go to sleep, we make the Hamapil blessing thanking Hashem for sleep. Can you explain to us the purpose of that blessing? A. Sleep is one of the biggest benefits that we enjoy in our lives. Sweet sleep is more important than medicines because at nighttime your worn-out nerves become mended. Everything in the body is restored by sleep. That’s why it’s good, if you’re not well chalilah, sleep all you can. Even in the daytime. Sleep and sleep and sleep. Sleep is a miracle. Why do you fall asleep? All of a sudden, you lie on the pillow and you fall asleep. It’s a nes. And while you’re asleep, all good things are happening. And therefore, when you make that blessing you should appreciate that gift because some people unfortunately cannot sleep. It’s a tragedy. Now, at the end of that blessing we thank Hashem “who illuminates the world with light.” Which means: We are going to sleep with one hope – that Hakodosh Boruch Hu should once more give us a chance tomorrow. “Hashem, we’re going to sleep and we look like we are dead. We beg You, revive us tomorrow morning and once more let us see the light of day.” Now, why mention the light of day? Because the light of day is the glory that bespeaks the presence of Hashem. That needs to be explained. The light of day that spreads over the face of the earth when the sun rises, that’s the kvod Hashem. The malachim say, “ ברוך כבוד ה’ ממקומו ,” when they see it coming out. And we hope to see the light of day tomorrow. We say to Hashem, “Please Hashem, we thank You for giving us the gift of sleep, but please, please, please, revive us tomorrow morning! We should once more see the light of day!” המאיר לעולם כולו בכבודו. Now, suppose it happens! Suppose you open your eyes and you see the light of day! Oh, is that a simcha! You should be excited! מודה אני לפניך – I thank You, מלך חי וקיים – O’ King who lives forever and endures, שהחזרת בי נשמתי בחמלה – You returned my life to me with compassion, רבה אמונתך – how great is Your steadfastness! How great should be our happiness every morning! Another day! You mean to say I get to wake up again! I remember once there was a member in my synagogue who went to sleep. In the morning, his wife came and said, “Mordechai! Wake up!” Mordechai didn’t move. “Mordechai, wake up!” He didn’t move. It was all over. And therefore, if you can move in the morning, how happy you should be! המחזיר נשמות לפגרים – He restores the soul to the dead bodies! How happy we are in the morning! Once more we have a chance to look at the sunlight and say, ברוך אתה השם יוצר המאורות – We thank You, Hashem, for the sunlight. Don’t take it for granted! So pray for tomorrow. And when the tomorrow comes, be enthusiastic in expressing your gratitude. INGREDIENTS: • 4 Cortland apples, peeled and thinly sliced/ chopped • 2-3 tangerines, peeled and chopped • 4 Beleaves fresh dates, pitted and chopped • ½ cup Beleaves frozen seedless passion fruit • 1 21-ounce can cherry pie filling • 1-2 tablespoons red cooking wine, optional • ¼ cup orange juice • 1 tablespoon lemon juice • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • 1 tablespoons vanilla sugar DIRECTIONS: • Add all the ingredients into a large saucepan and stir to combine. • Bring to a boil and reduce heat to a simmer. FEBRUARY 5, ‘25 // Stuffed Date PB & Pretzel Lollipops Sweet, salty, and nutty, these stuffed date lollipops are a fun, crunchy treat, highlighting one of the Shivas Haminim. Enjoy them fresh or straight from the freezer! INGREDIENTS: • 12 Beleaves Medjool dates, pitted • ½ cup creamy or crunchy peanut butter, nut butter, or chocolate hazelnut spread • ¼ cup dark chocolate chips • ¼ cup white chocolate chips • ½ cup Pretzels, coarsely crushed • Flaky salt, to taste • 12 popsicle sticks or fancy toothpicks DIRECTIONS: 1. Cut a slit into each date and remove the pits. 2. Fill each date with a teaspoon of peanut butter. 3. Stick a popsicle stick or fancy toothpick into each date to create a lollipop. 4. Melt the dark and white chocolate chips in the microwave or over a double boiler. If using a microwave, I recommend three 30-second intervals for the best results. 5. Drizzle the dates with melted chocolate and sprinkle with chopped pretzels and flaky salt. Enjoy! 6. To store, freeze or refrigerate in an airtight container. 88

FEBRUARY 5, ‘25 // Sweet Potato & Couscous Pilaf A hearty, sweet, and salty side, loaded with pearled couscous, roasted sweet potatoes and crunchy toppings. Serve warm for a cozy, flavor-packed dish! INGREDIENTS: • 2-3 cups couscous, cooked according to package instructions • 3 medium sweet potatoes, peeled • Cooking spray • ½ teaspoon salt • ½ teaspoon pepper • ⅓ cup maple syrup or honey • ⅓ cup chopped walnuts, pecans, or pistachios • 2 teaspoons pumpkin and or pepita seeds • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds • 1-2 tablespoons dried cranberries • ½ teaspoon cinnamon DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat your oven to 425° and line a metal baking sheet with parchment paper. 2. Slice the sweet potatoes into long spears and spread in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet. 3. Spray the sweet potatoes with cooking spray and sprinkle with salt and paper. Toss until fully coated. 4. Bake for 30 minutes until tender and golden around the edges. 5. While the sweet potatoes are baking, mix the maple syrup, chopped nuts, seeds, cranberries, and cinnamon in a small bowl. 6. Remove the sweet potatoes from the oven, and use two large spoons to toss with the maple nut mixture (it doesn’t have to be perfectly distributed). 7. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 8-10 minutes, or until the walnuts are toasted and the maple mixture is bubbly. 8. Serve warm as is, or over a platter of cooked, warm couscous.
